Higher Animal Welfare in Meat Chickens

In this episode we head out to find out for ourselves what is involved in producing the chicken we know and love.

Australians love their chickens, so much so that each Australian eats on average about 50 kilograms of chicken every year.

That means that nearly 690 million meat chickens are raised every year for Aussie consumers.

One thing that these consumers deeply care about is animal welfare. Whether they’re Free Range or barn raised, it’s important that the animals are happy and healthy.

We were invited by the RSPCA Australia, to look at the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme, to understand what higher animal welfare standards look like on the farm through to the supermarket shelf.

In this video we met with both Ingham's and Baiada to look at both barn raised and free range farming, as well as traditional genetics and the new slow-grown variety of birds.
