OUR STORY

G’day and Welcome!

The Humans of Agriculture story began in 2019, as a passion project because we wanted to help create a platform that celebrated the real stories of people involved in Aussie agriculture.

The facts showed us that society and agriculture were becoming more disconnected and that people in agriculture had a growing frustration that mainstream media wasn’t accurately portraying them.

We know that agriculture has a key role in everyone’s life, because no matter who you are, or where you’re from, every day, you need agriculture. It’s the foundation of life.

“A pivotal moment was the trip to South Africa and meeting a taxi driver, a man from Zimbabwe, his life ambition was to return home to be a subsistence farmer. That conversation showed me the importance of perspective” - Oli

So we wanted to go on a journey for ourselves, to understand more about how Agriculture shapes us, from the people involved in it.

We thought the easy part would be to get people in agriculture talking who they are, what they do and why they do it and that our focus was on building the audience to re-connect agriculture and broader society…. if only it was that easy!! haha.

We still didn’t get a lot of traction and while Oli was asking our guests to share their names, faces and stories, he wasn’t overly comfortable about doing it himself. At the beginning of 2020, with a very gentle shove from some friends and mentors, he put his face and name to Humans of Agriculture.

“I was scared of the potential negativity and I didn’t want this to be about me. What I realised, the brands I trusted most, I felt like I had a real connection and knew the people behind them, without ever actually meeting them”

And so the Humans of Agriculture podcast was born, a chance for our audience to come on a journey with us.

After just one episode, the pandemic lockdowns began in Australia and all of a sudden this passion project became a healthy distraction and an opportunity to have a virtual coffee with people all over the world to hear their stories and learn from them.

Fast forward to 2022, and we got itchy feet again, wanting to learn differently we took our audience behind the scenes of modern agriculture, launching our first video segment called ‘This is Aussie Ag’.

What have we learnt so far?

“I’ve learnt there is so much to agriculture and so much to learn. Through being curious and asking questions, listening better and helping our storytellers to own their story, we can transform the conversations around agriculture”

Oh and one BIG lesson…

Everyone has a story and what’s ordinary to one person, can be extraordinary to others.
